Perhaps the Violands did not always know how to grow one-hundred varieties of tomato, but they have been growing long before Red Fire Farm opened its doors. Ryan opened his first farmstand when he was twelve, where he sold wild berries found in his backyard. In just five years, he was renting additional farmland to grow and sell produce. Sarah grew up surrounded by rural farmland, but discovered her love of farming at Vassar College, where she joined the Poughkeepsie Farm Project; from there, she started her own CSA farm, “Down to Earth,” before meeting and joining Ryan at Red Fire Farm.
Ryan and Sarah continue to inspire their community: they have donated over $90,000 worth of produce to hunger relief initiatives; have opted to grow organically since 2001; and provide opportunities for farm skill building among a diverse staff. Red Fire Farm’s virtue extends to the quality of their produce; they sell a variety of vegetables, but one could not go without trying their basil, cilantro, or dill herbs.
