In 1982, Dwight Sipler turned an abandoned field into the beautiful “Small Farm”–a piece of land that is now perpetually protected by the town of Stow. The land is currently leased by Elena and Karl, both of whom have spent years cultivating their love of farming. Elena began growing in 2006, after being fascinated by her older sister’s role at a local farm, while Karl began farming soon after he was too old to attend summer camp. As a result, he took a farming position and the rest is history.
Small Farm is a spot where the community can interact; you can pick your own flowers or take a hike on the trail that runs alongside the farm. Small Farm grows and sells during all four seasons of the year, and has three seasons of CSA programs. Elena and Karl also value sustainability when harvesting; they use organic seeds and naturally-derived fertilizers/pesticides. Customers can be sure to find a variety of fresh vegetables and berries at their 4-acre “small” farm, where you can try everything from crunchy kale and scallions to fennel.
