In 2004, Gideon Porth founded Atlas Farm on 2.5 acres of rented land in Montague– it has now expanded to 100-acres, where Gideon grows a diverse array of certified organic produce in South Deerfield. Gideon started Atlas Farm after observing the inspiring work that Community-Supported Agriculture (CSAs) farms had on improving local food systems; he not only wanted his customers to feel more connected to their food, but wanted to do so sustainably.
Atlas Farm envisions itself as a “model of ecological production:” their fields are nourished with cover crops and naturally-occurring soil amendments; pests are controlled through crop rotation, cultivar selection, and biological controls; and the farm store and Hillside greenhouses are solar-powered, with the farm itself offsetting 200 tons of carbon annually. Gideon is continuously working to achieve 100% bio/solar power–a feat that is not easy for a farm.
While Gideon’s favorite crop to eat is cherries, his favorite to grow are greens–so make sure to try some of Atlas Farm’s napa cabbage and lettuce!
