Dick Violette established Dick’s Market Garden in 1944 and it has been successful ever since. While the farm is now run by Dick’s son, Stephen, Dick’s Market Garden is not just a two man job; the farm runs with the help of returning, full-time seasonal employees, and also a mix of community parents, retirees, and high school/college students.
Steve’s motto is “safe food;” he wants his customers and his employees to feel safe growing and consuming the farm’s produce. The farm continuously exceeds safety and environmental standards set by the Commonwealth Quality Program by using Integrated Pest Management. They see spraying as a last resort–Steve will first experiment with the culture around a crop to keep away pests and weeds. For example, he’ll surround his berry plants with straw, plastic covering, or long strips of grass to keep weeds away. Dick’s Market Garden pollinates by hand and uses no genetically-modified seeds.
There’s nothing more refreshing than one of their plums or peaches on a hot summer day–you won’t want to miss out!
