Farmer and Fresh Meadows Farm owner Dom Fernandes is a proud third generation farmer of Cape Verdean descent. Dom's grandfather started constructing the cranberry bogs in 1945 after emigrating from the drought-induced islands of Cape Verde, a culture rich in farming. Dom started farming full-time in 1981 and established Fresh Meadows Farm in 2005, and after a three year transition period the farm was certified organic in 2008. Fresh Meadows Farm practices the traditional dry harvesting method to maximize freshness and the color of the cranberries and grows only the smaller "Early Black" and "Howe" heirloom varieties that are better suited for organic production. They feature locally grown, heirloom, and certified organic fresh and frozen cranberries and distribtute their cranberries to both the retail and wholesale markets.
